Chromium

Chromium is a trace mineral essential for human health. It primarily enhances the action of insulin, a hormone critical for glucose metabolism, and plays a role in lipid and protein metabolism. The biologically active form of chromium is often referred to as chromium picolinate, chromium polynicotinate, or trivalent chromium (Cr³⁺).

Potential Mode of Action

Insulin Sensitivity

● Chromium enhances the effects of insulin by improving its binding to receptors and
increasing insulin receptor signalling.

● It acts through the chromodulin protein, a chromium-binding protein that facilitates insulin action by:

● Activating the insulin receptor kinase.

● Enhancing glucose transporter (GLUT4) translocation to the cell surface, allowing glucose
uptake into cells.

Blood Sugar Levels

● Facilitates the uptake of glucose by cells, thereby reducing blood glucose levels.

● Reduces insulin resistance by improving cellular signalling pathways.

Some studies suggest that chromium supplementation improves glycaemic control by enhancing insulin sensitivity and reducing fasting blood glucose levels. This may delay or prevent the progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes by improving insulin sensitivity.

Dietary sources of Chromium

Chromium is found in a variety of foods, such as meats, grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, spices, brewer's yeast, beer, and wine. However, the chromium content in these foods can differ significantly due to variations in local soil and water conditions, as well as the agricultural and manufacturing practices involved

Common Dosages

● Typical dose: 200µg/day.

Forms

● Chromium Picolinate: The most bioavailable and widely studied form.

Brewer's Yeast: A natural source of chromium.

Precautions

Toxicity: High doses (>1000 µg/day) over extended periods may cause kidney or liver issues.

Interactions: Chromium may enhance the effects of insulin or antidiabetic medications, increasing the risk of hypoglycaemia.
