Test information

This test measures the level of DHEA sulphate (DHEAS), a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. DHEA is an androgen (a type of sex hormone) that the body converts into other hormones, including testosterone and oestrogen.

Checking your DHEAS levels can help in the assessment of adrenal gland function. Low levels may indicate adrenal insufficiency, while elevated levels may be seen in conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Most of the DHEA in your body exists in your blood in the sulphated form, DHEAS, which we measure in this test.

Produced by the adrenal glands, DHEAS plays a role in the production of sex hormones like testosterone and oestrogen. Levels naturally decline with age and may influence various aspects of health and wellbeing.

This test can help assess adrenal function and determine whether your DHEAS levels are within the normal range for your age. Elevated levels may also support a diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Research continues into the role of DHEA in age-related conditions, immune health, fertility, and chronic disease management.

Test preparation:
Avoid taking biotin supplements for 48 hours before your test. If you're taking biotin under medical advice, speak to your doctor first. While DHEAS levels are generally stable throughout the menstrual cycle, for consistency in repeat testing, we recommend taking the test between days 2 and 5 of your cycle if you have regular periods.

DHEAS levels begin to decline naturally from around age 30.

Suitable for individuals aged 18 and over.
