Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system mistakenly targets the body’s own cells and tissues as if they were harmful invaders. This abnormal immune response leads to inflammation and damage, with symptoms varying depending on which part of the body is affected.
Common autoimmune conditions include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Graves’ disease, systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), and rheumatoid arthritis. In some cases, the immune attack is focused on a specific organ—such as the thyroid in Hashimoto’s—while other diseases, like lupus, can affect multiple systems throughout the body.
The exact cause of autoimmune disease is unknown, but it’s well established that women are more commonly affected than men. Your risk is also higher if you have a family history of autoimmune conditions or if you’ve already been diagnosed with one yourself. Symptoms can vary widely and may come and go in flares or persist continuously.
This test measures Antinuclear Antibodies (ANAs), which are produced when the immune system fails to distinguish between healthy cells and harmful pathogens. These antibodies attack components inside your own cells, often causing symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, and inflammation.
The presence of ANAs in the blood is a key marker of autoimmune activity. While most commonly associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), ANAs can also be found in other autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and Sjögren’s syndrome. This test helps support the investigation and diagnosis of these conditions.
How the test works:
A qualified nurse will visit your home (anywhere in the UK) to collect a venous blood sample from your arm at a time that suits you. The sample is then sent to a certified laboratory, with results typically available within 7 working days.
