The Organic Acids Test (OAT) gives a broad metabolic overview with 76 individual markers, making it a useful gauge of a patient’s overall health. It accurately assesses intestinal yeast and bacterial activity; elevated levels of these microbes can contribute to behavioural issues, hyperactivity, movement problems, fatigue and poor immune function. People living with chronic illnesses or neurological disorders frequently excrete unusual organic acids in their urine. These elevations may stem from previous antibiotic courses, diets high in sugar, weakened immunity, infections or inherited factors. The Great Plains OAT also reports on vitamin and mineral status, oxidative stress and neurotransmitter balance, and is the only test of its kind to measure oxalates, compounds strongly associated with many chronic conditions. When the OAT highlights imbalances, targeted interventions—such as tailored supplementation or dietary changes—can be introduced to restore metabolic health.

Your kit is posted to you from the UK within 24-48 hours of ordering so you should receive your test kit within a few days via DHL. You can then arrange for DHL to collect your sample using the free returns service. If you are ordering from outside the UK we will ship via DHL or Fedex with return labels.

The kit comes with full instructions on urine collection and storage. We recommend you take your sample first thing in the morning. The sample comes with a freezer bag. Please freeze your sample for a minimum of 4 hours before you arrange for DHL to collect.

When we receive your results back from Mosaic Laboratory in the USA (approx 2 weeks) we will email you your PDF report along with our functional medicine advice to support your recovery depending on the support option you selected at checkout.

Specimen requirements are 10 mL of your first morning urine before food or drink is consumed.

The reason we ask for your first morning urine is that it is normally the most concentrated sample and has the highest PPM (parts per million). If you have bladder issues we suggest picking another time in the day but minimum requirements for an accurate result is 3 hours between urination.

Avoid apples, grapes, pears, and cranberries as well as their juices or products 48 hours before collection. Avoid arabinogalactan, echinacea, reishi mushrooms, and ribose supplements for 48 hours before collection. The reason we use Great Plains is for the high levels of sensitivity of their equipment. When you order testing through our website you will be asked to complete a form highlighting which supplements and medications you take so our functional medicine team know what your current protocol is and can advise / adjust as required.

Mosaic are the best labs in the world for this type of testing. They will immediately reject any samples not dense enough for testing and let us know. If this is the case we will send you another test kit.

No although we recommend not starting testing on children under 2. If the patient is young or incontinent then you may need to manually retrieve a sample via potty / bed pan.
