The Oral Microbiome Test offers a detailed analysis of the bacteria, archaea and fungi present in the mouth—organisms that are crucial to both oral and overall health. Employing advanced shotgun sequencing, the test examines a saliva sample and can identify up to 700 distinct microbes. It reports on 25 potential pathogens associated with dental plaque, tooth decay, gum disease and inflammation, plus 16 opportunistic taxa whose patterns are linked to specific health risks. Only microbes actually detected are listed, with emphasis on the balance between beneficial (commensal) and harmful (pathogenic) organisms.

Unlike the gut or vaginal microbiomes—where higher diversity is generally a marker of good health—oral health depends more on achieving the right microbial balance, so diversity metrics are not included. The test therefore helps evaluate functional capabilities and clarifies the role of the oral microbiome in overall wellbeing.

Growing evidence highlights the close relationship between oral health and systemic conditions. Disorders such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and even cognitive decline have all been connected to the state of the oral microbiome.
