The Vitamin B12 test determines your B12 level using a simple blood sample. In the UK, up to 6% of people under the age of 60 and as many as 20% of those over 60 fail to meet the recommended intake of vitamin B12. This essential, water-soluble vitamin—also known as cobalamin—is crucial for several bodily functions, including nerve function, cell division, and the formation of blood. Because the body cannot produce vitamin B12 on its own, it must be obtained through food.

A deficiency in vitamin B12 can affect multiple systems in the body. The most biologically active form of the vitamin is bound to a special transport molecule called holotranscobalamin (Holo-TC). This is the form the body can actually use, and it's exactly what our test measures. The Holo-TC value is considered the most reliable and sensitive indicator for detecting vitamin B12 deficiency, even in its early stages.
